Silverstein and Me by Marv Gold – Review

Silvertein and Me

Shel Silverstein produced an iconic body of work – be it cartoons, music, children’s books, poetry or plays, Silverstein was as prolific and versatile as he was talented. Silverstein gave few interviews and had the reputation of a recluse, so many have speculated as to who the “real” Shel Silverstein was. Silverstein and Me is a memoir by childhood friend Marv Gold that aims to shed new light on the life and times of this figure that many have dubbed “Renaissance man”.

Entertaining – if occasionally hard to follow – Silverstein and Me is an anecdotal retelling of boyhood adventures and shared experiences. Gold’s writing makes you feel as though you are in the room with him swapping stories, recalling memories in a humorous format that, at times, reads a bit like Gonzo journalism meets surrealist fiction. Reading this book on Sudafed, as I did, will leave you feeling especially delirious. Funny and compelling, this memoir provides a unique look at Silverstein as his friends knew him.

Silverstein and Me: A Memoir is available on Amazon for $15.56. AME, Inc. provided me with a copy of this book for review.
