When it comes to practical, device-saving gifts for the gearhead, Bits Limited has a great selection of surge protectors to keep those precious gadgets safe – which is especially neccesary this time of the year with winter weather. I recently received a SCG3 Energy Saving Smart Strip to review, and I was certainly happy to add it to our collection – when the entire household works with computers, you truly cannot have too many surge protectors. This powerstrip is unique, because it has been specifically designed to reduce power use. I’d like to give you a visual illustration using color-coded lights:

Here, I have plugged red, blue, and green lights onto the corresponding sections of the surge protector. As the red bulb illustrates, the crimson portion of the strip has power at all times. The blue section does as well, but we haven’t yet hit the switch on the blue bulb’s socket.

Once we flip the switch on the blue bulb, we see power activate to the green section as well. The idea is that power will not go to the green plugs until something is plugged into the blue section and powered on. This domino effect means it is specifically designed with items like computers in mind – since you will not need power to a monitor, for example, without the PC itself being turned on. Since it’s designed to work this way, you’ll want to save it for your techie gadgets, as it’s not really meant for things like appliances. Meaning: It is a specialized gift perfect for a tech guy or girl!
