I was recently invited to check out UrgentRx’s website and order a box of Heartburn Relief to Go for myself. I’m no stranger to heartburn; in fact, I had quite a debilitating problem with it about 5 years ago. I began experiencing episodes of acid reflux so severe that they caused intense esophageal spasms which lasted for hours at a time, inflicting intense chest pain. Most people wouldn’t realize it, but I actually have a high pain tolerance. For example, I walked around on two dislocated kneecaps for a solid year before a doctor was able to diagnose it and set my knees back into their sockets. Suffice to say, I can put up with a lot. So it’s with no exaggeration when I say that the pain from esophageal spasms is the most excruciating thing I have ever experienced. I ended up having so many episodes of this that I was unable to eat regular food for several months because I would get so sick – I lived on saltines and steamed vegetables, and had to take an OTC antacid every day per my doctor’s orders. The physician advised me that stress was causing the majority of my acid reflux issues, and as time went on I learned to recognize the initial symptoms so that I could prevent attacks from happening. If I feel my chest tensing up during a hard day, I know it’s time to take a break or apply a heating pad!

For the most part I have learned how to stop esophageal spasms before they start, although I have episodes very occasionally. Food is no longer an issue for me unless I have an “Off” day, and then I’ll avoid my trigger foods – namely, spicy and deep-fried meals. When I have a day like this, I take an antacid to help relieve the discomfort; even mild heartburn can be annoying, and I’m always extra-aware of it since I don’t want it to get out of control. But I feel very fortunate that I no longer have to be scared when I eat anything since I now understand the causes of severe esophageal spasms and rarely have major issues with it now. These days, I can enjoy normal activities, like a visit to my favorite Mexican food restaurant!

Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant

Jai and I treated ourselves to dinner at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant on Tuesday evening. We love this place because of the great atmosphere, friendly staff – and of course, the food!

Chips and salsa

Salsa is one of those foods that I’ve struggled with in the past, but not this week!

Om nom nom!

As you can see, I’m enjoying my salsa quite thoroughly!

Sharing a Chimichanga

For the main course, Jai and I split a Chimichanga. These are one of my favorite things to order – and a few years ago I had to avoid anything deep-fried completely.

YUM!

Since we just started our new diet plan, Jai and I purposely kept our portions small and in keeping with the program we are following. The most important lesson I’ve taken from the last few years is that it’s critical for me to take the time to care for my body and not run myself into the ground. Weight loss efforts have a knock-on effect of reducing acid reflux for a lot of people as well as improving one’s overall health. This is just one of many different steps I have taken to better look after myself – and similarly, adding a new heartburn product to my cupboard will help me be prepared to treat mild heartburn symptoms the next time they pop up. An ounce of prevention and preparation goes a long way!
