If rats are driving you crazy, then this giveaway is for you: TWO lucky Contest Corner readers will each win a Victor Rodent Fast-Kill Refillable Bait Station mouse trap with 20 bait blocks, so read on!

It seems like I’m always writing about pest control, doesn’t it? When you live right by the woods, you get more than your fair share of bugs and rodents. When it comes to rodents as an animal, I actually quite like them; I think mice make cute little pets and I’m totally fine with wild rats when they’re out in nature – but not when I have some grizzled, unwelcome rodent running around my house. I wish I didn’t have a need for rat traps, but when they are invading my home it’s me versus them and there’s just not a lot of options. We’ve been having ongoing issues with rats since November, when I woke up one fine Monday morning to discover rat droppings on my office floor. Oh, Mondays! I’m really, really, really uptight about keeping things sanitary at all times so this was NOT COOL. The frustrating part was that we were doing everything possible to get rid of them. We had glue traps and snap traps all over the house and crawlspace/attic areas, and the rodents kept escaping from them.

We also tried to identify areas where they might be getting in so we could block them out. The trouble with an old house is that there are so many imperceptible cracks and crevices in the large crawlspace and attic areas where a rat could squeeze in without us seeing it right away. And also, these rats are pretty genius. Do you know one of the ways we discovered they were getting in? Why, they were climbing up a tall tree, jumping off the branch and onto the roof, then scurrying through the gutter and into a teeny slit between the eves. We discovered this when I saw a rat JUMPING ONTO THE ROOF while walking by a window. I mean really?! Jai blocked up the tiny spot on the roof where they had been getting in, but the fight continues. The rat activity has diminished about 75%, but we still see signs of them creeping around the trap we have set in a crawlspace. Grrrr!!

I usually avoid putting rat poison under the house, as my experience in the past has been that the rodents will find the bait, and then die in between the wall where they can’t be reached and cause an ungodly foul odor for weeks. However, I want the last of these annoying rats gone gone GONE so when I got an email offering me free rat poison from Victor, I said YES!! This product is their new Refillable Bait Station, a trap designed to be safer for indoor use by keeping the bait stored inside a plastic container that can’t easily be reached unless you’re a rodent. The bait station is hard to open (Which is the point, since they want to keep this more secure for indoor use), so watch your fingers. It’s a small trap and really intended for mice – we seem to mostly have pretty large rats, but I thought this might be a good addition to stick next to our glue AND snap traps to ward off the last stragglers. We have the bait station in place and set – so now, we just wait. When I announce the winners of this giveaway next month I’ll update you on how it’s going!

The Refillable Bait Station with 20 bait blocks retails for $8.93 and is available on VictorPest.com and in stores.
