Wigging Out

Wigging Out

Yesterday, I shared a little tour of my house with you. Something I got a lot of feedback on was how I use my Care Bears as makeshift mannequin heads to keep my wigs on, so I thought I’d share a little more on my goofy wig collection!

Back in 2007, I worked part-time in a retail store in order to beef up my savings while I built my own business. The dress code at this job did not allow “Unnatural” hair colors, and by that they meant shades like pink, blue, purple, etc. Since I love to change my hair color a lot, I mulled over how I could continue to keep my own style without violating the dress code. I thought about buying a wig, but most wigs are very expensive. Then one night, I searched through eBay and found a shop that offered extremely inexpensive wigs. I ordered one on speculation, not sure how it would look. It ended up working well enough that I bought two more and used them to cover up my real hair while I was at work!

Here’s my real hair in 2007, dyed bright red:

Beeb's red hair

In case you were wondering, I was showing off this prom dress that I bought on clearance. I think it cost around $7. Yep, I’ve always been very frugal!

Beeb's black wig

Here’s a photo of me from that same week in 2007, wearing my black wig. Oh, and the glasses are fake too. I like how glasses look, so I bought a clear pair as a fashion accessory! 😉

Beeb's blonde wig

Here I am later that same year, wearing my blonde wig. This one looks the least realistic out of my wig collection. Granted, none of them really looked “Real”, but it fit the dress code, so if my job didn’t mind, I didn’t mind! 😉 Oh, and the decor in the background is Jai’s. He likes to decorate his office space by nailing old computer parts to the wall.

Beeb's brown wig

Finally, here is my brown wig. I was going for an ’80s look with this outfit. 😉

And in case you were wondering why you didn’t spot the brown wig in yesterday’s photo – I ran out of Care Bears, so I keep this one on top of my bass guitar.

Guitar-turned-wig-holder

I know! It looks like a dead rat. This wig was kind of a hot mess by the time I wrapped up my retail days, so I relegated it to the guitar. Wigs with long hair look cute when you wear them, but they tangle so easily – or at least the cheap ones do! Picture ratty Barbie hair, and that’s about what you’ve got with this one!

I don’t really wear my wigs anymore, since I work at home full-time now. I did pull out the black wig last year for my Adam Levine Halloween costume, and I also wore my blonde wig on a Starbucks run during a bad hair day, which felt like a very Britney thing to do. 😉

The irony is, I can do whatever I want with my hair now, and I haven’t dyed it in over a year! This is the first time I’ve had my hair its natural color in about a decade. The reason I stopped dying it temporarily is because bleaching and dying requires more time on your feet that you’d think, and with my knees being injured, it was just too painful and exhausting. But I’m doing a lot better this summer and starting to feel a little more like old self, so I’ve started to plot out what my next color might be! 😀

  1. I had my drivers license photo taken in a wig when I got my first license. It was a page boy style that I bought at the grocery store when I was 17.

  2. I’m loving the funky red- I couldn’t pull it off but it looked cute on you! &That is hilarious that he decorates with computer parts because my fiancee asked me *just last week* if he could build a computer on the wall- it’d look just like yours but it’d be functional. We have a three year old, so it’s not gonna happen, but the timing is hilarious to me, especially since I’ve never heard or seen anyone else do that before!

  3. Karen – that’s awesome! I love it. In my first license photo I have hot pink hair. Looks like a wig, but it’s real! 😉

Shell – I know exactly what you’re talking about with the working computer nailed to the wall! Your guy’s probably into case mods, huh? I think our S/Os would get along well!

  4. LOVE your wig collection! You look awesome with red hair. I just cut mine so all my red is gone. *sniff* I need to dye it one of these days. 😀
