Making Homemade Air Freshener With doTERRA Essential Oils

Wild Orange Essential Oil

doTERRA are an essential oils company that produce a wide variety of fragrant oils. I recently received a complimentary bottle of their Wild Orange essential oil for review, an oil that smells absolutely lovely with a bright, citrus scent. It doesn’t just smell orange-y – this oil reminds you of a basket of really good, fresh oranges. Very nice! I’m a fan of all things fragrance, so I thought it would be fun to look up different uses for my new essential oil.

I had thought about using the essential oil in a homemade body scrub recipe, but the label mentions that skin sensitivity is a possibility and that you should avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying the product. I’ve had reactions to essential oils before and sun sensitivity is a big concern for me – remember how super sensitive my skin is! – so I decided not to use it as a bath & body product. Essential oils can be used for a lot of other things, from fragrance to a homemade cleaning product additive and apparently, even ingested. According to the product page, this oil is certified GRAS by the FDA, meaning that it can be consumed. Some uses they suggest are adding to water or some recipes – who knew!

Homemade air freshener

Instead, I thought it would be fun to look up some homemade cleaning ideas and see what I could make with this oil. I settled on doTerra’s suggestion of adding a few drops of the oil to water in a spray bottle and using as an air & fabric freshener. I took an old Windex bottle, filled with water, added some drops of oil, and shook it up to mix. I tried spritzing it in the kitchen and didn’t smell much, so I added a LOT more oil and tried again. You can smell a slight orange scent when you spritz it in to the air, but it’s not detectable in the room after spraying it. If you use a lot of scented candles/air fresheners, this might not be your thing, but if you prefer more subtle products or have a sensitive nose, you might like it. The scent was more pronounced when I sprayed it on fabric – this could be a nice thing to spray on decorative pillows or the like.

I also tried a tip from this page, which suggests adding drops of essential oil to a cotton ball, placing in a Ziploc bag with a few holes poked in, and placing in a cupboard space for freshness. I put mine under the sink, and opened the door the next day to see if I could tell a difference. I could vaguely tell that there was an orange freshness in there.

I had fun learning about uses for this oil and trying it out. I used most of the bottle between my two projects, but I still have a little left to enjoy!

  1. I am all about using essential oils as an alternative to store bought products. So much better to use than all of those crazy chemicals!

  2. Since my children have fragrance sensitivities this sounds like a product we could use for a fabric spray.
