Standard fabric face masks like this one can help stop you from touching your face, while also helping to avoid getting germs directly into your mouth and nose. Medical grade face masks are needed when you are in regular contact with someone with the virus, and should be kept for these people, and the medical workers who need them most.
These masks are not medical grade, however, they are within CDC guidelines for use when no other masks are available: “In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP [health care provider] might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE [personal protective equipment], since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.â€
The best way to prevent a virus spreading is to wash your hands regularly, especially after using public transport or being at large gathering, and disinfect objects and surfaces at your home and work place regularly.
