Cleaning Out My Closet With The Honey Can Do Hanging Shelf

My closet

Because my closet and drawer space is limited, it’s created some areas of unwanted clutter simply because there’s just not enough room! As we work on our home renovations, we plan to optimize and increase our closet space, but in the meantime I have to work with what I’ve got. So when I had the chance to review a complimentary Honey Can Do Hanging Shelf & Drawer Organization Set sold at Macy’s, I thought this would be a good chance to re-haul how I store some of my accessories.

Hanging the shelf organizer in my closet

I spent Tuesday afternoon cleaning out my closet, which always gets that Eminem song stuck in my head. My brain is like a jukebox, I swear. 😉 The first thing I did was push some of my clothes to the side to make room for the hanging shelf. It’s easy as can be to set up – just unfold and hang with its velcro straps. It comes with two drawers, so that you can store small items in this as well.

So, what’s the first thing I put into my organizer? For the answer to that, look in the upper right hand corner of the photo above. I had a selection of belts and feather boas on a hanger, but the hanger broke and I didn’t have another, so I ended up just shoving it through a hook above the closet. Totally junky, right? This is one of those annoyances that ends up hanging around because there’s always so much to do and so little time, so you end up with little projects building up.

Top shelves on organizer

I took the scarves and feather boas off the broken hanger and folded them up to store in the hanging shelf.

Bottom shelves on the organizer

In addition to my fabulous boa collection, I also used one of the shelves on this unit for my leg and arm warmers. (Which I’ll be wearing more now that the temperatures are dropping!)

Organizer drawer

I used drawer #1 as a handy catch-all for some of those accessories that didn’t have a good home and had been cluttering up my sock drawers, such as shoelaces and bandanas. I also had some lanyards hanging off the back of my door which have a much better home here.

Glove drawer

Finally, I used drawer #2 for gloves.

Finished product!

And here it is – my newly organized closet! I was pleasantly surprised at how much of a difference this made in the overall appearance of the whole room. I wish I had gotten some “Before” pictures of the other areas of clutter that I was able to organize that I hadn’t anticipated – for example, those lanyards which were hanging off the back of my door. I had a bunch of stuff hanging off the hook on that door, which I was able to put away in this organizer. I then was able to use the hook on the back of my door to hang my purses off – which had previously been hanging off the back of the door handle because I had nowhere else for them. This was another junky area that had driven me crazy for a long time but wasn’t high on the priority list with all the other chaos going on.

In addition, I was also able to get my dresser drawers better organized as a result. My accessory/sock drawers have really become jumbled, so I took this opportunity to sort those out as well. By putting the gloves, legwarmers, scarves, and miscellaneous accessories in this hanging shelf, I was able to pare my dresser drawers down to just the basics: Underwear, socks, and pantyhose. This will eliminate a lot of frustration looking for gloves and specific items!

I think this hanging organizer is great because of its sturdy velcro straps, deep shelves, and the option of having drawers on the bottom half. This is a very handy organizational tool, especially for those with limited space – it’s made a big difference in the appearance of my room and I’m most happy to have it. I’d say my closet organization project was a success!

  1. Ugh I really need to clean the area on my wire racks above my clothing that is hanging. I shove everything on them. Something like this would be ideal! BTW: love the boa’s!

  2. This is such a cute idea! I don’t have a boa collection, but I could use this for my toddler’s room!
