Couponing – Then And Now

Couponing – Then And Now

One of my first coupon hauls - 2008

With a nickname like “Super Coupon Girl”, I’m sure you can guess that frugality has long been a part of my life. Both my parents were extremely smart with money, and my mom was always a coupon clipper, snagging great deals with sales, rebates, and coupons from the Sunday paper. It’s no surprise that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! I’ve always been radically frugal myself, although I actually didn’t start using coupons until fairly recently. When I was first starting out in my adult life, I had so much going on with being a teenage homeowner and picking up the pieces after my mom passed away that I felt overwhelmed as it was. It was about 5 years later in 2008 when I stumbled upon a popular coupon forum and read the amazing stories of major savings. Naturally, I had to learn more and that’s when I became the major couponer I am today!

The landscape of saving money has changed so much in the last decade – when I was growing up, I remember my mom clipping all her coupons from the Sunday paper or maybe a magazine. Now, we have coupon blogs, matchups, forums, and thoroughly modern inventions like Internet printable coupons or smartphone exclusives like the Valpak Mobile app for Android and Apple, which allows you to wirelessly print and share coupons, scan QR codes and buy group deals from your tablet or iPhone. It seriously blows my mind to think that I can use coupons on a handheld device – what a long way we have come from the little envelope full of vouchers that my mom carried around in the ’80s! And coupons will only continue to evolve with the technology – who knows, in another 20 years we may be sitting inside virtual reality machines doing all of our shopping! 😉

What’s your favorite modern way of saving money?

  1. I love couponing! Just last week I bought something like $220 dollars worth of groceries for $101. Of course, as fast as people consume food in my family it doesn’t last long.

  2. i use to coupon like a queen a few years ago and saved our family so much money then i starting having really bad tummy problems and had to change my diet completely and now almost all of the food i cant eat we cant get coupons for so its been hard bot saving money :/

  3. I just hoped to take a couple of moments and inform
you that I liked the post. I frankly don’t think generally people know exactly how much labour that gets put into the making of a good webpage. I know that this will be sort of random however it bothers me occasionally. Anyways outstanding blog site.
