My Funniest Travel Story (Plus, JetSetVacations Twitter Party This Wednesday!)

My Funniest Travel Story (Plus, JetSetVacations Twitter Party This Wednesday!)

This post is part of a sponsored campaign with Global Influence. I have been compensated for my participation.

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit over the last few years. I’ve had all kinds of experiences, from the sublime to the strange – but they’ve all been memorable! I’ve been to France twice, and some of my biggest adventures occurred during these trips. I traveled to France by myself (Someday I hope to go back and take Jai with me!) and stayed with my dear friend Ember, who was studying in Poitiers at the time; and one of my funniest travel stories took place there.

Ember's apartment

Ember’s apartment

Ember’s apartment was located down a steep hill, close to a large park and busy road. One night, I walked up the hill to take out the trash. My hair was dyed pink at the time – this will be important later! The walk was around five minutes or so each way, and when I came back, there was an envelope attached to the front door. Assuming it was from Ember’s landlady, I handed it to her when I walked inside. She looked at the envelope, and said: “It reads ‘Pour la Denoiselle Qui à les cheveus Rose’ – ‘To the girl with pink hair’. It’s for you!”

I was bemused. Who on earth would have sent me this? I opened up the letter, which was entirely in French. I don’t speak French – I can say hello and order a hamburger, but that’s about it – so I handed the letter to Ember, who translated it for me:

Hello,

I excuse myself for writing to you since I am a little timid. It’s for that reason that I write to you. It’s true that we don’t know each other, but don’t worry yourself. I’ve never eaten anyone. I cross you often in town. Permit me to say to you that you were very pretty to my eyes. I don’t know if your heart is already taken? If, at any time you say to that, I leave you my number (His phone number was written here). We could get a drink, if you desire. I would really like you to know that it’s not in my habits to follow you, since I haven’t been able to “Stop-you-and-talk-to-you” in the road. But, when I know the person, my timidity disappears. I have brown hair, often in headphones, 1m 70cm, 65kg, brown eyes, and I am single. My little heart is for the taking, if you want it. I will say to you, perhaps I’ll see you later. Call me, please.

Kisses Princess

To this day, I have no idea who sent this letter. I didn’t see anyone during my walk up the hill, even though I always pay close attention to my surroundings. Apparently, this person had seen us in town, followed us home, and hid himself while I took out the trash so he could leave this note. This over-the-top French love letter is definitely one of the most funny – and creepy! – things that’s happened to me while traveling!

  1. How crazy! I don’t have any funny stories like that – just once using the mens bathroom at a water park in Cancun and not realizing it until after I came out and there was a mom with her teenage-ish son waiting there for me to leave! I was on my honeymoon and hadn’t been drinking ANYTHING. I was so mortified.

  2. Ha!! That’s too funny, Rachel! I actually met my fiance in the girl’s bathroom of our Kung Fu dojo, so if it weren’t for mix-ups like that, I wouldn’t be going on a honeymoon in the first place! LOL!

  3. Oh wow! I would seriously go back through all your pictures and check out the people in the background. You can probably see him in one or two if he had been around as much as he made it seem.

    That is bizarre though.

  4. I can’t think of any funny travel stories. Yours is funny in a creepy kind of way. I would have thought my friend was playing a trick on me.

  5. Yikes…makes you want to really watch your back, huh? Only funny travel story is when we were on our honeymoon I dumped ice into the tub while my new husband was bathing. Not nice, eh? Yes, we are still married. 🙂

  6. That reminds me of the “spam” emails I sometimes receive. LOL. That is kinda funny and then creepy all at the same time!
I don’t have any story like that. o.O

  7. How funny, and yet creepy and kind of sweet at the same time LOL…

Thanks for the heads up on the Twitter party as well 🙂

  8. Your article was very well written, have their own opinion. Analysis of various aspects are more profound, I really like, and I hope you can write a better article out.
