Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Wizards of Waverly Place Soundtrack Review & Giveaway – 2 Winners!

The Emmy-nominated show Wizards of Waverly Place has been ranked the #1 TV program for kids, thanks in part to tween superstar Selena Gomez. The actress and singer plays Alex Russo on Wizards, as well as singing four songs on the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack, featuring music from and inspired by the show. And two lucky Contest Corner readers will win a copy of this album for the youngsters on their holiday shopping list, so read on!

My Take:

Wizards of Waverly Place is a fun, bubbly soundtrack that boasts an assortment of tween idols performing magic-inspired cover songs, as well as some new favorites. I had some trepidation when I popped this disc in – I am not generally a fan of cover versions, and I was afraid this was going to butcher some of my favorite songs. But I was pleasantly surprised: instead of cringing, I found myself rather spellbound. In fact, these tween re-workings of 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s hits bring to mind the guileless charm of the A*TEENS, a group that I’ve always enjoyed. Tracks include Pilot’s “Magic”, covered by Selena Gomez, Sting’s “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, sung by Mitchel Musso, The Cars’ “Magic”, covered by Honor Society, Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride”, performed by KSM, and Meaghan Martin’s interpretation of Olivia Newton-John’s “Magic”. I found this album to be very cute and a blast to listen to – I love happy pop music, and although I’m far out of my tween years, I must admit that I have played this disc many times since receiving it!

Tweens are an age group that can be hard to shop for, so wouldn’t it be great to surprise them with something they’d really like? This would be a “magical” gift for any fan of the show, so skip the socks this year and surprise them with this cool soundtrack!
