When I was a kid, I was obsessed with “The Littlest Pet Shop” toys. They were the neatest playsets – in fact, I still have my old-school toys packaged away in storage somewhere. In recent years, the pet shop gang were re-imagined for a new generation and brought back with different toys and a new style. Piggybacking off this and the huge success of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Hub premiered their new series Littlest Pet Shop at the end of last year. I was curious to check it out both for nostalgia’s sake and to see if it was as entertaining as Ponies.

Littlest Pet Shop follows the adventures of tween Blythe Baxter and friends after she discovers that she can talk to the animals in the pet shop. She has all kinds of wacky adventures with her furry friends while trying to avoid the mean Biskit twins. The DVD I received for review, Littlest Pet Shop: Sweetest Pets, includes five episodes from the first season: “Bakers and Fakers”, “What’s in the Batter?” “Sweet (Truck) Ride”, “Trading Places” and “Topped with Buttercream”, along with a printable PDF coloring sheet. The show has a lot of music and I can see why it appeals to kids – for me personally as a boring old adult, I found the show to be a little too frenetic. When the bunny says “Aaaanywho” over and over again it drives me nuts, but I know kids are cracking up and that’s what matters. 😉 I also thought some of the characters were too stereotypical. However, there were some entertaining parts – I thought it was funny when businesswoman aunt Christie is asking people questions and then too busy talking on her bluetooth headset to hear their answers, since we’ve all met people in the workplace like that! All in all, I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch this on my own like I do with My Little Ponies, but if I were babysitting or had kids that watched this I wouldn’t mind watching it with them.

Littlest Pet Shop: Sweetest Pets is available on Amazon now for $12.99.

  1. My daughter loved Littlest Pet Shop when she was younger. It’s such a cute series. What’s not to like about talking animals?
