Rock of Ages Soundtrack Review

Rock of Ages is a new Broadway musical that takes hair metal to a whole new level. The One2One Network asked if I would like to review the Rock of Ages soundtrack, and when I read a quote from Poison’s C.C. DeVille calling Rock of Ages “The next Mamma Mia”, I knew that I just had to check it out!

About Rock of Ages:

“New Line Records just hammered the in-store release of the Original Broadway Cast Recording of five-time Tony Award nominated “ROCK OF AGES.” For those of you not in the know, Rock of Ages is the new Broadway musical starring American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis. Set in 1987 in a legendary Sunset Strip rock club, a small-town girl meets a big-city dreamer and they fall in love to the greatest metal songs of the 80’s. The musical is an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Reo Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and more.”

Campy and fun, Rock of Ages is a hair metal musical that mixes the unlikely combination of ’80s rock with a showtunes sensibility. A nostalgic and lighthearted effort, Rock of Ages tells its story through a medley of some of the decade’s most popular music. This upbeat disc is funny and quirky – hardcore rock fans might find the theatrical delivery to be a bit much, but the performances are consummate and are sure to be appreciated by both Broadway enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys feelgood music. I loved the song selection and found it to be a fun and entertaining listen; I also enjoyed how the show’s storyline was woven through the album, with dialogue and skits incorporated into the songs. This really captures the feeling of show and retells the story to listeners who haven’t yet had a chance to see Rock of Ages live. Most musical soundtracks don’t include this, so I thought it was a really good touch. This album is a headbanger’s ball that will delight rock fans and theater lovers alike!

There are a total of 22 tracks on the disc, which include:

Just Like Paradise / Nothin’ But A Good Time

We Built This City / Too Much Time On My Hands
