The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook

Are you looking for a fun gift for the retro-minded TV fan on your list? One lucky Contest Corner reader will win a copy of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook, so read on!

I grew up surrounded by vintage cookbooks. Most of the cookbooks I learned to cook from were from the ’50s and ’60s; to this day, my favorite cookbook is a Betty Crocker classic from the 1960s. So when I received a copy of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook for review, I was taken by it immediately. Now I must confess, I have only seen one episode of the program – gasp! – but I don’t have to be familiar with the show to tell you what an excellent job they did recreating the feel of a retro cookbook. They way the recipes are presented and the fonts used give it that warm feel and appearance of my favorite ’60s cookbooks, and I was impressed by the techniques the photographers used to recreate the look of old cookbook photographs – there are a few full-color photos in here that use the same type of color tones and presentation that were utilized in original cookbooks from that era. I love it, and it makes me feel strangely nostalgic myself – I didn’t grow up in the ’60s, but these type of cookbooks were prominent in my home growing up so I feel a warm connection to them!

And of course, if you are a fan of this TV show, you’ll have even more reasons to love this cookbook, as it includes and extensive episode guide which ties in the food and entertaining concepts to specific scenes on the show. How fun is that?

The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men by Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin is available on Amazon for $11.32.

  1. I liked this quote about the book:

“A treat! It’s like going back to our parents’ time and childhood with a very different eye in terms of where we are in the culinary world today. A fascinating culinary time warp.”
    — Evan Kleiman, Good Food, KCRW (NPR) Los Angeles

  2. I like that it gives tips on throwing a successful ’60s cocktail party. That’s cool! Thanks for the great giveaway and happy holidays!

  3. I learned that it provides invaluable historical and cultural context for the food and drink featured in Mad Men, tips on throwing a successful Mad Men party, and even a guide to favored Mad Men hangouts.

  4. I learned that some of the establishments themselves gave the book authors the exact recipes that they served in the 60’s. Thats kinda cool. Scratch that, that IS cool.
