Yellow Submarine DVD Review

Yellow Submarine

Whether you’re a Beatles fan or simply enjoy a bit of nostalgia, you won’t want to miss the DVD & Blu-Ray re-release of the classic ’60s cartoon, Yellow Submarine, which was released this week. Thoughtfully restored to translate to modern formats without losing its charm, this zany film will entertain longtime Beatles fans and newcomers alike with its blend of trippy animation, humor, and musical segments. But what makes this DVD most compelling for me is all the special features: You can view the original movie trailer, storyboards, pencil drawings, and photos, as well as watch the movie with commentary from Producer John Coates and Art Director Heinz Edelmann, which provides insights into the making of the feature.

But the best part, for me, was the inclusion of “Mod Odyssey”, a 1968 documentary that shows us behind-the-scenes footage shot during the film’s production. The DVD also includes a several interviews with the voice actors, animators, and writers. All of the extra features give a fascinating glimpse into the making of Yellow Submarine and make this a great addition to any Beatles collector’s film library.

Yellow Submarine Synopsis:

Once upon a time… or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland, a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humour, songs, and of course, their yellow submarine, The Beatles tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom.
