Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Five For Fighting – "Slice" Album Review

Five For Fighting, the hit vehicle for piano rocker John Ondrasik, is back with their fifth album Slice. Fans of Ondrasik’s soaring melodies will not be disappointed with this effort – a collection of 11 solid cuts, Slice has an evocative, almost cinematic quality, thanks in part to his collaboration with Academy Award-winning composer Steven Schwartz. Five For Fighting are well known for their storytelling, and are in top form here – the title track, “Slice”, is a feel-good homage to Don McLean’s “American Pie”; “Chances”, the first single from this record, is a sweet love ode, while “Tuesday” is a touching 9/11 tribute.

I found myself swept away by Five For Fighting’s timeless songwriting and uplifting sound. This would be the perfect disc for families to enjoy together, because the cuts on here have an appeal that spans generations.
